September 27, OPA Paint Out, Geneva, IL

Fabyan Forest Preserve was once part of the large country estate of George and Nelle Fabyan. They came to the Fox River Valley in the early 1900's, and bought a farmhouse and ten acres south of Geneva on the west bank of the Fox. Over the following 20 years they acquired 300-plus acres and developed the property into a fabulous estate they called "Riverbank". After their deaths in 1936 and 1939, the Forest Preserve District of Kane County purchased 235 acres of the estate and created the preserve. The Fox River Bike Trail, which follows the Fox River, also runs through the Preserve, so it is an easy meander up or down river for fabulous river scenes.

The Villa, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, is now a museum dedicated to the history of Riverbank and the story of the Fabyans, and houses their varied collections, some furnishings, and many historic photographs.

The Japanese Garden has been partially restored and replanted, and is a fantastic subject for painting. On Saturday, there may be weddings going on at the garden. We have the Garden itself reserved from 3-5 pm on Saturday, September 27th, so make sure to bring your camera!

The Windmill, also a National Historic Place, was completely restored in 2003- 4. The Public Visiting Hours for the Japanese Garden are 1-4 pm on Sunday.

September 20, Andersonville and Edgewater

The show at the Edgewater Historical Society, is coming up fast, so this weekend why not paint in Andersonville, in the Edgewater area. (Edgewater runs from Lake to Ravenswood and from Foster to Devon.)

Per Nancy Albrecht's suggestion, this Saturday let's meet in Old Town at the north end of the triangle, at Wisconsin and Lincoln. This would give people a chance to paint at the biggest Farmer's Market right across the street on Clark (a site the Old Towner's "Love") - or in the neighborhood. That should do it for Old Town sites as we prepare for the Old Town show this fall.

Per Stephanie's email: "We will get a free booth to sell whatever paintings we want. We won't have to pay commission on paintings we sell. Free parking. Painting on the grounds. We can paint on Sat - and Sunday is open to whomever wants to stay. There will be a baseball game re-enactment from the 1800s and civil war re-enactments. Lots of interesting things to paint. They mentioned that people frequenting this fair are hungry for artwork of the grounds. There will be an auction to which Beck is donating a painting."

August 3 SPECIAL OUTING Independence Park Farmers' Market

This Sunday there is a special outing to the Independence Park Farmers' Market.

The market organizer writes as follows:

"Our Farmers Market runs from 8 am to noon. There's street parking or in the park lot (entrance on Springfield just north of the fieldhouse). The market is set up along Irving Park Road between Springfield and Hamlin. We've been promoting the artists and the response has been very good. Folks are looking forward to this. We have bluegrass musicians who come and play every market. Neighbors can join in their fun too. It think this is going to be just great. Plus you can get really good food, cut flowers, and baked goods."

July 12 Bucktown Garden Walk

This Saturday is the Bucktown Garden Walk. Meet at Club Lucky, where the show will be.

This weekend we will be painting in Bucktown as part of the Bucktown Garden Walk. We can paint on both Saturday and Sunday. You are welcome to start painting at our early start of 8:30 am but the garden walk is officially scheduled from 11 am to 5 pm both days. There will not be a critique.

The Bucktown Garden Walk information table will be set up at Club Lucky (1824 West Wabansia) and the PAPC art exhibit and sale will be hung in their party room. You can paint anywhere you like including inside the gardens on the list previously sent out by Stephanie. You may want to stop by the information table to get an official map of the garden walk. As a courtesy, always ask if you can set up in a garden if it is not a public parkway garden.

Also, please stop by the information table to pick up a sign to hang on your easel saying you are part of the garden walk and are with the PAPC. You are welcome to sell your paintings as you paint (bring a few other paintings to sell too). You can keep 100% of any sale proceeds from street sales. If you need to charge the sale, you can go to the information table but you will have to donate 25% of your sale to the Bucktown Commuity Organization.

There will be a trolley taking people around and making stops at key areas including Club Lucky.

Welcome! Anyone with a desire to paint outside may join us each Saturday morning. We are a painting group, but welcome folks using other mediums. If you are new to plein air painting we’ve compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions that may be useful.

To get started, show up at the designated meeting point. If you see someone wearing a black hat with the PAPC logo on it, introduce yourself. There is no formal check in. Choose a location in the vicinity of our meeting point to paint, then go for it. Be mindful to clean up after yourself and dispose of your chemicals and paints responsibly (take them home). Meet back at the designated meeting point at Noon-ish for critique.

Is this a class?
No, this is not a class. We are group of artists (amateur and professional) who paint outside. There are many skill and experience levels within the group. All are welcome. If you need help with something specific when painting, feel free to ask anyone – they’re usually more than happy to help. Respect their time, they have to finish their painting too. We hold a critique at the end of each session.

Do I have to participate in the critique?
No. You may simply show-and-tell about your work and ask for it not to be critiqued. But why not get some pointers from great painters and new ones alike? There is also the quid pro quo – if you comment on someone’s work – you should offer them the same opportunity to praise your work.

What should I bring?
A field easel if you have one. If not, bring whatever you can paint or draw on. One member started painting by bringing an old music stand and coffee table to rest her work on. Bring paints, canvas boards or paper and your paints or pencils.
If Summer: It’s helpful to bring bug spray, sunscreen, and a visor or hat.
If Winter, bring an extra pair of gloves, disposable hand warmers (Hot Hands available at Walgreens) and wear the warmest clothes you can get on – especially boots. The thick insulated boots with removable felt liners (ice fishing boots) work best.

Are there bathrooms available during the paint outs?
We try to paint in public places where public restrooms are nearby. You may want to scout out a restroom before you begin painting so you know how far away it is (Starbucks, coffee shop, etc).

What if I have can’t make the exact times you paint?
You are welcome to begin painting earlier than our 8:30am time as well as finish before or after 12PM. Keep in mind that we informally meet as a group at Noon to have a critique.

Do I have to commit to the group?
No. There is no commitment. You are welcome to join us as little or as often as you like.

Can I show my paintings in your art shows?
Yes. Anyone who has painted with the Plein Air Painters of Chicago during one of our Saturday paint-outs are eligible to participate in our showings. There are some formal requirements (registration, nominal hanging fees and volunteering) that will be announced closer to show dates.

Is the work for sale?
It’s up to the artist. You can sell your work at any time – off of the easel, in a frame, etc. There are no eligibility requirements for selling – it’s a personal choice. However, if you decide to show your work at our shows, we kindly ask that you price them. A small percentage will go to the Palette and Chisel (where we show our work).

This Saturday there is a great opportunity for us in Lake Forest. This is an outing that Stephanie Weidner has been organizing. You can bring two or three paintings to sell as you paint, 35% of sales to go to Deer Path Art League's fundraiser.

Start by checking in at the Deer Path Art League booth at the Farmers Market in Lake Forest. This is important because you need to pick up gallery receipts to sell your paintings. You will also be given a map with 5 areas to paint.

This Saturday we're returning to the North Park Village Nature Center on the northwest side of Chicago: here is the home page for the park.

This is a place worth going back to. We have been there in summer and in winter, now is a chance to go in the spring. The park doesn't open until 10:00 a.m.--but that will give extra time for our coffee.

Hello everyone I want to invite all of you to attend a presentation I will be making on the history of the Palette and Chisel. The talk and slide show will be on April 12 at 2:00 at the P&C. It's open to the public and is a part of the open house that will be taking place that day.

I will have about a half-hour's worth of slides and talk about the club's history. It's a subject I'm terribly keen about and would love to share my interest with you.

Sorry for the late posting. I'm in Tucson this week and I've been painting like I'm killing snakes. Anyway, with the Barns and Farms show coming up at the Barnsite Studio in Kewaunee, I thought the place in Schaumburg would be worth another go. Get your barns and farms at the Volkening Farm. If your not into the barnsy stuff, there is plenty else. I'll be back out a week from Saturday.

Spring Valley Nature Center is in Schaumburg, part of the Schaumburg Park District. There is a nature preserve and a "heritage farm" on the same property--Volkening Farm. April 3-13 @ Palette & Chisel Gallery, 1012 N. Dearborn, Chicago 60610 10-6 daily, 11-3 weekends (GALLERY SITTERS NEEDED FOR THE WEEKENDS)

RECEPTION: FRIDAY APRIL 4 5-8 PM.

ELIGIBLE: Paintings done on PAPC Saturday paint-outs, AND larger paintings done in the studio from on-site studies. (It would be fun to show both!)

ENTRY FEE: $25 for up to 3 paintings. Make checks payable to Palette & Chisel, and write PAPC on check memo line and on envelope bottom left and mail check to the P&C. Money will be used for 3000 cards; bulk mailing to 2000 person P&C invitation list: beverages and minimal food for reception. MEMBERS BRING ADDITIONAL FOOD.

DROP OFF: Bring wrapped and labeled paintings on March 31 and April 1 to the P&C office. Do not leave unsecured in gallery or hallway. INCLUDE A RESUME AND/OR BIO IN YOUR ENTRY PACKAGE FOR USE IN A GALLERY BOOK. CLIENTS WANT THIS INFORMATION!!!!! Paintings without labels or wires for hanging will not be installed! February 26 Special: Art Institute UPDATE: POSTPONED/CANCELLED

UPDATE: Unfortunately, Chicago Tonight has had to cancel on filming us for February 26. No new date has been set, but we are told that the show is still very interested in doing a story. Stay tuned for more details.

We are having a special outing on February 26, also at the Art Institute, so that Channel 11 can shoot our group for a piece they are doing on the PAPC. Right now the plan is for the crew to shoot us when we are setting up to paint around 12:30 and then mostly after about 1:30. We'll meet at the front steps of the Art Institute around 12:15 and go from there.

This is an awesome opportunity for publicity in advance of our Fourth Annual Show that opens on April 4. Beck Anstee has been the moving force behind this--she deserves a huge round of thanks for coming up with the idea and following through with it. Let's have a good turn out for Channel 11 and show them how plein air is done the Chicago way.

Fourth Annual PAPC Show: April 4 to April 13

The PAPC's Fourth Annual Show will be held at the Palette and Chisel, 1012 N. Dearborn Street, Chicago, from April 4 through April 13, 2008. The opening reception will be on Friday, April 4. More details will follow.

Come on out and get some paintings with us, meeting every Saturday throughout the year, rain or shine. Paintings in the show will have been done with the Saturday morning group on one of our outings. In the past we have also hung pieces that were scaled up in the studio from smaller field studies that were done with the PAPC; this is under consideration again for this year.

So get out now while the getting is good--there aren't that many Saturdays between now and April 4.

February 16 Spring Valley Nature Center, Schaumburg

Spring Valley Nature Center is in Schaumburg, part of the Schaumburg Park District. There is a nature preserve and a "heritage farm" on the same property--Volkening Farm. The farm buildings will be closed on Saturday but the Nature Center opens at 9 a.m. We'll meet at the Nature Center (where there will be warmth) and fan out from there. The map above shows the layout of the area, although it's oriented with north toward the bottom of the page for some reason.

Leslie Outten sent me a photo she found from the summer of 2003 when the group had first started. This was one of our first trips to Montrose Harbor. I recognize Leslie, Virginia, Scott Tallman and Scott's sister Amanda. And of course Scott's dog, Emma.

As for my painting, as I told Leslie, I think I've painted over that one at least twice.

January 26 Old Town

This Saturday people will be meeting in Old Town, specifically at Nookies on Wells Street, 1746 N. Wells. This is in furtherance of the possibility that we might have a show in old town later this year. So let's get in a winter painting of the neighborhood.

Nancy Albrecht, who suggested Nookies as a place to meet, reports: "There is street parking on Clark (one block east) and other parking as one finds it. It is on the 22 Clark bus line as well as North Ave. bus line 1 1/2 blocks south."

PAPC In American Artist

Congratulations all around--the PAPC has gone national. And it should. I'm not aware of any plein air group in the country as dedicated as ours or that turns out as much good work as ours. Well done--keep coming back.

January 12 Humboldt Park

This Saturday we're returning to a little known gem of a place in Chicago. The North Park Village Nature Center is a city park on the northwest side of Chicago: here is the home page for the park.

I'm looking forward to going back here; we were there this past June and ever since I've wanted to go back when there was snow on the ground. The park doesn't open until 10:00 a.m.--but that will give us extra time for our coffee.

Long May We Paint

We're often asked, as we paint, "Who are you? Is this a class?" Here is the beginning of an answer.

By tradition and design, the PAPC has been a free, voluntary, informal association of artists who paint together on Saturday mornings in the Chicago area. Whoever shows up to paint is by virtue of that amazing fact a member of our group and is entitled to all of the privileges, benefits and emoluments of such membership.

The privileges and benefits, and the accompanying responsibilities, which accrue to a member of the PAPC include the following:

1. he is entitled to freeze his butt off in the winter on Milwaukee Avenue while the snow makes his brushes soggy and ruins his "snowscape";

2. she is entitled to be bitten by flies at the Montrose bird sanctuary because she forgot her bug spray and wore shorts instead of long pants;

3. he is entitled, but not required, to submit his painting to a loosely structured, often rambling and self-contradictory, critique by other painters at the end of the morning, bearing in mind to take what he needs and leave the rest;

4. she is entitled to participate as much as she wants in the critique of others' paintings, politely keeping in mind that every painting, however buggered it may appear, is "salvagable";

5. he is not required to pay any dues, swear any oaths, or adhere to any persons, foreign or domestic;

6. she is entitled to exhibit plein air paintings, in whatever medium, in our group shows, keeping in mind not to spend all of her earnings in one place;

7. he is not required, but freely may, assist in any joint undertakings of the group, most notably in hanging our shows and getting the word out in the manner of a carnival barker;

8. she is entitled to, and by all rights will, grouse about going to Montrose or Humboldt Park "again," as long as she herself puts forward the occasional suggestion about where to paint;

9. he is not required to join the Palette and Chisel, or as it is also known, Peyton-on-Dearborn;

10. if she paints with us one time only, on only the balmiest summer morning in June, and never paints with us again, she may forever call herself a member--since she is going to do so anyway, and how would we stop her?;

11. he is not subjected to committees or elections or drafting of by-laws, since all such things make his head hurt worse than looking at a "Kinkade;"

12. she is expected, always, to share her method of gluing linen to board or her method of mixing a tricky shade of green;

13. he is not expected to go out of pocket on behalf of the group, but if he does so in connection with a show or some other incidental expense, he must have the good grace to either frankly seek reimbursement from others or not to complain about it--we do not keep books.

October 27 Ridge Park and Vanderpoel Museum

This Saturday we will meet at Ridge Park, on the south side. The Vanderpoel Art Museum is there, and we will get the chance to look through their exhibition after we are done painting. If you've never been there, this would be a good time to go--Sid Hamper has kindly agreed to keep the museum open after its normal closing time in order to accomodate us.

John Vanderpoel was an instructor at the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 19th and early 20th Century, back before the Art Institute essentially gave up on representational art. Vanderpoel instructed many young artists; he was famous for his classes in life drawing. Vanderpoel's book, The Human Figure, is still in print today and is widely used.

After Vanderpoel died in 1911, his colleagues, friends and former students donated works of art to what began as the John Vanderpoel Memorial Art Association. The association, along with Vanderpoel's devotees, petitioned the Ridge Park District Commission in the Beverly neighborhood to build a space for the collection. The Vanderpoel Gallery was built between 1929 and 1932; it's connected to the Ridge Park fieldhouse.

Be sure not to miss this one.

We actually did this Paint Out Site last February. It is a wonderful little village that is like a trip back in time. When we were there however, it was freezing and an incredible storm was blowing in. We all went to different hovels and worked. Susan Flanagan and I waited out the cold in the charming little coffee house in town and sketched and talked. The lesson learned -- always have a sketch pad and pencils -- just in case.

Roger Beck Photos Available

Of the two photographers that took photos of our outing last Saturday at Humboldt Park, one of them--Roger Beck, Errol and Stephanie's friend--has posted them on his website. You can check them out by going to his on line gallery: http://www.rogerbeck.com/galleries

Once you are there, you have to register by giving some information and selecting a personal password. Once you have done that, use the access code papc to enter the gallery of photos Roger has posted of our outing. They are very nice. If you would like a copy of a particular photo, he'd be happy to make one for you.

Send me an email if you are having trouble viewing these photos.

PS I have uploaded the photos I took to the PAPC account with Flickr, where you can view photos I have taken of group outings going back to 2005. Just click on the link to the PAPC Photos in the upper right hand corner of this page.

Plein Air Show Success: Gallery Sitter Needed

The Plein Air show at the Palette and Chisel has been a great success--the turn out was good last Friday and the paintings have sold well. A number of sales occurred last Saturday when people were out walking in the neighborhood, so we'd like to have someone sit in the gallery this weekend to welcome people and show them the exhibit.

Here is a reminder of some details for the upcoming show:

Drop-off at the Palette and Chisel: July 23 - July 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Each artist may submit up to three pieces. The hanging fee is $25. Be sure to affix a label and business card to the work with the title, size and price of the work.

Keep in mind also that the pieces have to be of Chicago and vicinity.

Transfer To Flickr

Yahoo photos--our free photo hosting service so far--is going out of business. Perforce I have been required to transfer the old photo albums of our outings, and new albums as they are made, to Flickr. This is also free, but the transfer is not yet complete. So when you click on the PAPC Photos link at the upper right, you should be taken to the Flickr page where our albums will be. There are two there now; the rest of the albums should arrive soon.
