June 2 Printers' Row, Dearborn and Harrison

The green of Humboldt Park was refreshing last Saturday, as the rain stayed away, but this week the group can meet in the city for a different challenge. There is a Starbucks at the corner of Dearborn and Harrison where people can meet before and after.

This neighborhood has dramatic views of the old Dearborn Street train station, and there is the Franklin Building, 720 S. Dearborn, that has mosaics designed and executed by Oskar Gross, a longtime member of the Palette and Chisel.

Mapquest will take you there.

(Above is the old Dearborn Street station before it suffered a fire in 1922. The peak on the clock tower was not replaced after the fire, which is pictured below.)

The T-shirts Have Arrived, $10 Each

For all of you who ordered a t-shirt, your day of glory has arrived. The t-shirts arrived today and they look great.

We ordered enough of them to bring the cost to $10 per shirt. Let me know how you want to pick yours up. I will have them with me next weekend, the weekend of the 25th and 26th, and if you come out to the Friday evening paint out or to the Saturday morning with the model, you can pick yours up then.

For those of you who ordered them from afar, please send me an email at stuartpainter at yahoo dot com and I will give you my address where you can send a check and a postage-prepaid envelope. That way I can just drop it into the mail for you.

P.S. I ordered a few extras in each size--S, M, L and XL--but supplies are limited. Don't delay if you want a t-shirt. Email me now!

May 25 Paint Out: RSVP

The evening of May 25, Friday, we are planning a paint out down in the city near the Palette and Chisel. Our plan was to paint in the afternoon and evening light, then to gather at the P&C afterwards for an informal critique of our paintings and some camaraderie. The T-shirts should have arrived by then and I will have them on hand for those who ordered them (and who have the $11 per shirt they cost).

Please let me know if you are planning to attend. We're trying to make arrangements for refreshments, etc., and would like an idea of numbers. You can email me at stuartpainter at yahoo dot com.

Hope to see you there.

P.S. One Mr. Scott Tallman Powers has said he will be with us that evening. Stop by and say hello before he jets off on another painting adventure.

May 26 Outdoor Model, Humboldt Park

On Saturday May 26 we will have a live model to pose for us in Humboldt Park (scroll down the page for the location for May 19). We will meet at the boathouse, on the east side of Sacramento/Humboldt Boulevard, where there is a parking lot. Lauren will be our model, and she will pose from 9 to 12.

Of course you are not required to paint from the model. Humboldt Park is an excellent place for all of us. But painting from the model outdoors is a new thing for the Saturday group, and it is very exciting. I will let you know about the model fees in the next couple of days.

If you click here you will see a map of the park. The boathouse is on the south side of the lagoon, on the east side of Sacramento/Humboldt.

(This is a photo of the boathouse taken in about 1909. Today there is a parking lot where the ladies are sitting.)

May 19 Roscoe Village

Roscoe Village is a charming neighborhood. It was only recently that I discovered it. Then Stephanie and Errol suggested it as a place to paint.

Everyone can meet at the Starbucks located at 2023 W. Roscoe, just west of the intersection of Roscoe and Damen. I won't be there (I'll be hanging out with a certain 12 year old boy) so if someone could take photos and email them to me I'll post them to our album.

Mapquest will guide you there.

May 12 Wagner Farm, Glenview

This week the group will meet at Wagner Farm in Glenview. This is one of the last working farms in the area and was bought by the Glenview Park District a few years ago. This will be a good place to work on a submission to the Barns and Farms show in Kewaunee. (Submissions are due by May 25.)

Wagner Farm is located at Lake and Wagner in Glenview west of the Edens--1510 Wagner is the number. Here is a link to Mapquest showing the location of the farm. We will meet in the parking lot on the east side of Wagner Road at 8:30 or so. The farm opens at 9:00 and they sound excited to have us there. See you on Saturday. Bring your big canvas!

May 5 Rialto Theater, Joliet

This Saturday people will be joining Rita Rogan's group in Joliet at the Rialto Theater. Rita has secured a great opportunity to paint in the Rialto, which has a long history and is filled with ornate architectural details.

Details, including directions and more description of the Rialto can be found here.

Another T-shirt Update

I will be placing the order for the t-shirts no later than May 8 in order to have them in time for the paint out on May 25. Cost will be less than $15 per shirt, the more shirts we order the lower the cost. They will be black short sleeved collarless t-shirts with white printing.

Please email me at stuartpainter at yahoo dot com if you have not already done so to order a shirt. I need to have a good idea of how many people will buy a shirt before I advance the money to pay for them.

Here are the two logos we are choosing between, each designed by Jim Hajicek. Thanks, Jim!
