Sketch Hunters

It always serves to be mindful of what an odd, rare and noble thing we are privileged to do in this group, in painting from life. For it is odd to stand in public, paint besmattered, making messes of canvas. It is rare, this group of artists--how rare it is hard to overestimate. And it is noble--sometimes foolish, but always noble--to proclaim one's love by means of art.

Here is how Robert Henri put it in The Art Spirit:

The sketch hunter has delightful days of drifting about among people, in and out of the city, going anywhere, everywhere, stopping as long as he likes--no need to reach any point, moving in any direction following the call of interests. He moves through life as he finds it, not passing negligently the things he loves, but stopping to know them, and to note them down in the shorthand of his sketch-book, a box of oils with a few small panels, the fit of his pocket, or on his drawing pad. Like any hunter he hits or misses. He is looking for what he loves, he tries to capture it. It's found anywhere, everywhere. Those who are not hunters do not see these things. The hunter is learning to see and to understand--to enjoy.
(One of Henri's sketches is reproduced above, the 8 x 10" painting called "Sailing.")

PAPC T-shirts

I would like to order T-shirts for the group that have a PAPC logo on them. Please let me know if you are interested so I can figure out roughly how many to be ordering. You can let me know either by commenting here on the blog or by emailing me at stuartpainter at yahoo dot com.

I will be placing the order in a couple of weeks.

March 31 Logan Square

This Saturday let's meet in Logan Square, where two of the city's grand boulevards meet. I know some of you have been there before, so you know what a great spot it is.

Logan Square is at Kedzie and Logan, and there is a blue line stop on the el right in the square. You can also find directions by going to mapquest and entering the intersection you are looking for.

PAPC LOCATION AND PALETTE & CHISEL "PAPC" TRANSITION

Hello again Everyone,
If you have not heard, I will not be running the group as of next week. My life has taken some turns and my schedule has gotten very busy. So I need the time to focus. But, I will still be coming out with the group from time to time. So, I am not leaving entirely. I have received so much from you all and I will never forget what I have learned from you over these last 3 years. I thank you all so very much!!! You have changed my life for the better.

With that said, Val(the President of the Palette and Chisel) offered up a great idea. The Plein Air Painters of Chicago will now be under the umbrella of the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts here in Chicago. Stuart Fullerton has stepped up and will be spear-heading the operation. Thank you Stuart!!! But, he will need some help from time to time, so please lend a hand when you can. This can be a huge undertaking so I thank Stuart, Val and Bill at the Palette for taking this on. It should be a great partnership. I look forward to see what the future holds.

Stuart will be taking over next week with the future posts, and he will keep you updated with the transition to the Palette and Chisel.

Thank you all again and I will be seeing you outside.

PAPC LOCATION: MARCH 10TH- RUSH STREET, CHICAGO

Hello Everyone,
The group show this past Friday looked great! Everyone has grown so much over the past 3 years. I was so impressed. Thank you for participating and for such a kind gift. I will never forget all that you have done for me.
If you have not heard already, I will soon be handing this group over to the Palette and Chisel. I will still be going out with everyone from time to time, but my work load has gotten so great, I just can not handle the responsibility anymore. I hope you understand. I will be back in touch for more details about the transition. But, I am not leaving yet, until Val and I at the Palette, get things straightened out.

This week for the last day of promotion for the show, we will be on Rush Street this week to try and get more collectors to come in and see the show. Sunday is the last day of the Group Show.
If there is anyone who is in the show and would like to gallery sit from 10am - 2pm, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Scott
